I’m writing to express deep concern about the so-called "big, beautiful bill" currently moving through Congress. While it includes language that suggests support for Main Street and family farms, the actual provisions seem to prioritize corporate interests and tax breaks for the wealthy at the expense of everyday Americans.
According to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, this bill would add $2.4 trillion to the national deficit—placing a significant burden on future generations. Even more troubling are the proposed cuts to Medicaid, which could severely impact access to healthcare, particularly in rural communities that already face limited options. These changes could be devastating to vulnerable populations and the rural hospitals that serve them.
I appreciate that leaders like Senators Josh Hawley and Susan Collins have voiced objections to parts of the bill that would harm their constituents. It's important that all lawmakers stand up for the people they represent and push back against provisions that increase inequality or threaten essential services.
It’s also disheartening to see efforts to fast-track this legislation by July 4th, despite widespread public concern and insufficient debate. Responsible lawmaking requires time, transparency, and cooperation—not arbitrary deadlines or partisan pressure. Dismissing legitimate concerns as grandstanding only undermines the spirit of collaboration that’s essential to good governance.
Statements like Senator Mitch McConnell’s comment that the American people will “get over” whatever is passed come across as dismissive of real struggles faced by working families. This kind of rhetoric can deepen the divide between the public and their elected representatives.
I strongly urge you to oppose this bill as it stands and advocate instead for a truly bipartisan process—one that listens to constituents, balances the budget responsibly, and prioritizes the long-term wellbeing of all Americans. Please choose a path that unites rather than divides, and that places country over party.
Thank you for your service and for considering these concerns.
