Oppose the SAVE Act to Protect Voting Rights for Women and Veterans

I am writing to urge you to vote NO on the SAVE Act (Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act), which passed the House on February 11. This legislation would create insurmountable barriers to voting for millions of Americans, particularly women, while solving no actual problem.
The SAVE Act requires Americans to provide documentation proving citizenship to register to vote, including birth certificates, U.S. passports, or naturalization paperwork. It would eliminate mail-in, online, and voter registration drive options. This disproportionately harms women who have changed their names after marriage. According to the Center for American Progress, as many as 69 million American women have taken their spouse's name, meaning their birth certificates no longer match their current legal names. More than half of all Americans do not have passports according to a 2023 YouGov survey. The Brennan Center for Justice reports that more than 21 million American citizens don't have the required documents readily available.
This bill also disenfranchises our military. Soldiers deployed overseas would be forced to return home to register to vote in person, effectively blocking hundreds of thousands of American troops stationed abroad from exercising their constitutional right. Tribal IDs, Veteran IDs, and Military IDs become useless if they don't explicitly prove citizenship.
The justification for this legislation does not exist. Non-citizen voting is already illegal with strong protections in place. A Washington Post and AP study found no examples of systemic voter fraud over the last 50 years, and no examples that could have overturned any State or Federal election.
This is an unnecessary and unconstitutional attack on voting rights that will silence millions of eligible American voters. I urge you to vote NO on the SAVE Act and protect the fundamental right to vote for all citizens.
