An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Protect Prisoners From Cruel Treatment

20 so far! Help us get to 25 signers!

You have a responsibility to protect prisoners from cruel and inhumane treatment. What's happening right now is torture, and you need to act immediately to stop it. Incarceration is meant to be punishment through loss of freedom, not through deliberate suffering. When we allow cruelty behind bars, we abandon our most basic moral obligations. These are human beings in state custody who cannot protect themselves. That makes their treatment your direct responsibility. I expect you to investigate these conditions, hold those responsible accountable, and ensure prisoners have access to basic human dignity. This isn't about being soft on crime. This is about whether we're a society that tortures people or one that maintains minimum standards of decency even for those who've broken the law.
