An open letter to State Governors & Legislatures (N.C. only)

Immigration policies

As a citizen of North Carolina, I am deeply troubled by the incoming federal administration's plans to conduct mass deportations of immigrants. While I recognize the federal government's role in immigration enforcement, I strongly believe that our state should not be complicit in this misguided and morally questionable endeavor. I am writing to urge you to publicly denounce the use of state resources, including our brave police officers, for the purpose of deporting individuals who have built lives and contributed to our communities. The deployment of state agents for the federal government's deportation efforts would be seen as a betrayal of our shared values and an abuse of the public trust. Additionally, I implore you to reject any requests from the federal government to share local law enforcement resources or data for the purposes of immigration enforcement. Our police are tasked with serving and protecting all residents, regardless of immigration status. Involvement in deportation operations would jeopardize the critical trust between law enforcement and the immigrant communities they serve. The moral and ethical case against these deportations is clear. But beyond the humanitarian imperative, such policies would also be devastating for our economy and social fabric. Removing millions of productive workers and taxpayers would cripple industries, shrink our workforce, and drain resources from schools, hospitals and public services. The damage would be felt by everyone. With your office, you have the power to shape our state's response to federal immigration policies. I ask that you make a clear statement denouncing any participation by state agencies or personnel in the mass deportations being pursued by the incoming administration. We must lead with compassion and uphold the dignity and humanity of all people, no matter their background. Thank you for your time and consideration of this important matter. I look forward to your leadership in ensuring that North Carolina remains a welcoming and just place for all.
