I understand that there are some in the Congress who are proposing a public option for health insurance. I personally favor Universal Healthcare where we can all go to the doctor and not worry about going broke. The Medicare for All (of us) Act, H.R.3069 does that and it does it for far less than we pay now. Let me remind you that it makes sure medical facilities have their basic costs covered with global budgets, can make sure doctors and facilities are in place in medical deserts with regional administration, covers long-term care and does it without copays or deductibles.
That is what I want you to pass. However, if you are going to consider a public option, like the Affordable Choice Act, H.R. 3599, https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/senate-bill/3599/text, then I want you to know there is a risk. The risk is that the pool of insured people may not be sufficiently well distributed and so the system might not be able to cover its costs. A public mandate that everyone be insured is what is needed to make sure that the pool of those insured is sufficiently distributed that insurance will work. Of course, H.R. 3069, the Medicare for All (of us) Act, does that.
If you have no other choices, then try your best to make the public option work as a demonstrator for Universal Healthcare and put in place safeguards to make sure it can sustain itself by having the diverse pool I mentioned.
