Protect Hemp Industry Jobs: Remove Harmful Provision from H.R. 5371

I am writing to express my deep concern about a provision in H.R. 5371, the Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, 2026, that threatens to devastate the thriving hemp industry in our country. This provision, which redefines federal hemp to exclude most intoxicating cannabinoid products, would effectively ban their production and sale nationwide after a one-year grace period. The hemp-derived cannabinoid sector has flourished since the 2018 Farm Bill legalized hemp with less than 0.3% delta-9 THC. This industry now contributes an estimated $13-28 billion annually to our economy. The proposed ban would not only disrupt this significant economic activity but also jeopardize countless American jobs and businesses that have been created in this innovative sector. As your constituent, I strongly urge you to take immediate action to remove this harmful provision from H.R. 5371. The bill has already passed the Senate with a 60-40 vote, but there is still time to make this critical change before it becomes law. The current definition of hemp has allowed for the growth of a diverse and valuable industry that provides economic opportunities across the country. Implementing this ban would stifle innovation, eliminate jobs, and potentially push consumers towards unregulated markets. Instead of imposing blanket restrictions, we should focus on sensible regulations that ensure product safety while allowing the hemp industry to continue its positive economic impact. The potential implementation of this provision in late 2026 gives us a window of opportunity to reconsider its implications. I ask that you work with your colleagues to strike this provision from the bill, protecting American businesses and preserving the jobs of hardworking citizens in the hemp industry. Our economy cannot afford to lose a multi-billion dollar sector, especially one that has shown such promise and growth in recent years. Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I look forward to hearing about your efforts to protect this vital industry and the livelihoods it supports.
