Oppose Two-Year Limit on HUD Housing Assistance in FY2026 Budget

I’m writing to urge you to reject the Trump administration’s proposal in the FY2026 budget to impose a two-year time limit on federal housing assistance for most low-income households. This policy threatens to destabilize millions of Americans, deepen the affordable housing crisis, and push countless families into homelessness.
The proposed changes would consolidate five core HUD housing programs and cut funding by over 40%, while directing HUD to impose time limits on assistance for households without elderly or disabled members. This fundamentally changes our nation's commitment to providing safe, stable housing to those in need — and does so without offering meaningful pathways to economic security.
Most people who rely on housing assistance are already working, caring for children, or facing significant health challenges. Others are doing everything they can to find stability in the face of rising rents, low wages, and long waitlists for public programs. Simply ending their support after two years — regardless of local housing conditions or employment opportunities — is not only unrealistic, it's profoundly harmful.
Experts across the political spectrum agree: housing stability is essential to economic mobility, educational success, and long-term health. Evicting families from assistance doesn't create self-sufficiency — it creates homelessness.
Instead of punishing struggling Americans, we should be investing in proven solutions: expanding rental assistance, building affordable housing, and supporting job training and childcare programs that help lift people out of poverty for good.
I strongly urge you to oppose these proposed time limits and protect long-term federal housing assistance for families who need it. Please stand with your constituents by advocating for policies that strengthen — not weaken — the foundation families need to thrive.
