I am livid about the recent US military strikes on alleged drug boats, which have resulted in 57 deaths. These actions, ordered by President Trump and announced by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, blatantly disregard international law and violate due process rights that should be afforded to all individuals.
The campaign to combat narcotics trafficking, while crucial, must never supersede our commitment to legal principles and human rights. The outcry from regional governments, international law experts, and members of our own Congress highlights the egregious nature of these strikes.
We cannot ignore Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum's demand for adherence to international treaties. The escalating tensions with Colombia and Venezuela underscore the severe diplomatic consequences of these ill-conceived actions. It's deeply troubling that our government is contemplating an expansion of this campaign to include land-based targets, potentially circumventing proper Congressional oversight.
I demand that you take immediate action to stop these illegal maritime strikes. Our anti-drug efforts must strictly comply with international law and respect due process for all individuals, regardless of alleged crimes. The mere suggestion of seeking Congressional approval for expanded operations is insufficient – we need an immediate and complete halt to this strategy.
The sanctions imposed on Colombian President Gustavo Petro and the deployment of military assets near Venezuela are further cause for alarm. These actions, combined with rumors of attempts to remove President Nicolas Maduro, risk severely destabilizing the region and violating national sovereignty.
As your constituent, I insist that you use your position to call for an immediate end to these strikes, a thorough investigation into their legality, and a return to diplomatic solutions that respect international law. Our national security interests cannot come at the expense of human rights and the rule of law. Act now to address this urgent matter before more lives are lost and our international relationships suffer irreparable damage.
Stop the murders. Comply with international law. Due process is for everyone. These are not just slogans, but fundamental principles that must guide our nation's actions. Your swift and decisive action on this matter is not just requested – it is imperative.
