I strongly object to the blanket terminations of employees from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This action is reckless, illogical, and lacks any strategic planning. It jeopardizes the VA’s ability to care for our veterans.
The recent memo instructing top-level staff to “resize and tailor the workforce to the mission and revised structure” is vague, disorganized, and fails to justify how these cuts will improve services or meet the evolving needs of veterans. The directive to “move out aggressively” contradicts any claim of a "pragmatic and disciplined approach." It is simply a reckless and indiscriminate assault on the VA that will harm veterans and staff alike.
PLEASE NOTE: The VA workforce has grown in recent years because veterans’ needs have grown—especially with the passage of the PACT Act, which expanded care for those exposed to toxic substances. Meanwhile, the overall number of federal employees has remained largely unchanged. This isn’t government bloat; it’s a necessary response to the real and increasing demands on the VA as we take responsibility for service-related injuries.
Firing tens of thousands of employees—especially without a proper evaluation of the consequences—is completely out of step with the needs of our society and our veterans. It is not a rational or responsible decision to reduce the workforce at a time when veterans require more care than ever before. These cuts will create more harm to the very individuals we have a duty to support.
I urge you to use your position to advocate for the immediate halt of these layoffs. You have the power to call for hearings, demand investigations, and pressure VA leadership to take a more thoughtful, strategic approach—one that prioritizes veterans’ care and the stability of the services they rely on.
I expect a prompt response detailing—and publicizing—how you are using your influence to ensure that veterans continue to receive the high-quality care they deserve.
