Urgent Need to Protect Mass Transit Funding in Greater Philadelphia

I’m writing to express serious concern about the potential cuts to mass transit services, particularly in the Greater Philadelphia area. These cuts would have a significant negative impact on thousands of residents who rely on public transportation every day.
For example, SEPTA is considering cutting the Trenton Line on its Regional Rail service due to a post-pandemic funding shortfall. This line is a vital link for people commuting to and from downtown Philadelphia for work, medical appointments, and leisure activities. Eliminating it would be a major setback for the region.
Additionally, proposed cuts to bus routes would disproportionately affect disabled individuals and those without access to a car. Public transit is essential for these members of our community to live independently, attend appointments, and carry out daily tasks. Taxis and ride-share services are not affordable alternatives for everyone.
Moreover, many who work or need to visit the city simply do not want to drive due to the high cost of parking, heavy traffic, and environmental concerns. Encouraging more driving only increases greenhouse gas emissions and congestion. Cutting transit services will not only create logistical nightmares, but also harm local businesses, tourism, and jobs that depend on a robust public transportation system.
I urge you and your colleagues to prioritize full and sustained funding for mass transit across our major cities, including Philadelphia. The time to act is now—before these essential services are disrupted and the effects ripple through our communities and economy.
Thank you for your attention to this critical issue.
