An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Protect a 4-Year-Old Girl Facing Deportation and Death

3 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

I am writing to you today to urge you to speak out against the potential deportation of a 4-year-old girl, identified by the pseudonym "Sofia," whose life depends on critical medical treatment she receives here in the United States. Sofia suffers from "short bowel syndrome," a serious condition that prevents her from properly absorbing nutrients and fluid from food on her own. She has been receiving "lifesaving medical treatment" for this condition at Children's Hospital Los Angeles since she and her parents arrived from Mexico in 2023 on humanitarian parole. Her medical care is intensive, consisting of specialized IV treatments administered for up to 14 hours a day. Her lawyers state that, according to the equipment manufacturer, this treatment can only be administered in the United States. Alarmingly, Sofia's lawyers warn that without this medical care, she could die "within days" if she is deported. The sources indicate there is no treatment available for her in Mexico. The family is facing potential deportation. Sofia's mother, Deysi Vargas, has received letters from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stating her humanitarian parole is being terminated and that it is time for her to leave the United States. One letter stated that failure to depart immediately would result in potential law enforcement actions leading to removal. This situation, including the termination notices shared by the family's legal team, has been reported by Megan Forrester of ABC News (https://www.yahoo.com/news/4-old-girl-receives-medical-001614430.html). While a senior DHS official told ABC Los Angeles station KABC that reports of active deportation are "FALSE" and the family’s application for humanitarian parole is "still being considered," the family has submitted another application but has received only a formal letter mentioning the looming deportation. Lawyers for the family have stated that deporting them under these conditions is "not only unlawful," but constitutes a "moral failure that violates the basic tenets of humanity and decency". Treatment in the U.S. has allowed Sofia to "live her life" with her family, but returning to Mexico would mean she would be "at the hospital day and night". Despite improvements, she is "not at the point where she can survive on her own," her lawyers said. We cannot turn our back on this child. I urge you to publicly speak out against the deportation of this medically fragile 4-year-old girl and her family. Please use your influence to advocate for a humane solution that ensures Sofia can continue receiving the critical, life-sustaining medical treatment she needs here in the United States.
