Today I take pen in hand to write you and strongly oppose and Vote NO on the nomination of Katharine MacGregor as Deputy Secretary of the Interior.
She’s an environmental disaster in the making — again.
Although she wasn’t — amazingly — convicted of any crimes during the first Trump Administration like many of her colleagues, MacGregor has enough red flags in her resume and did enough damage the first time around.
To start with, she has a track record of prioritizing fossil fuel extraction over environmental protection. She even works for an energy company now, and has been a lobbyist. What could she be after with our public lands?
She’s consistently and callously ignored Indigenous rights during her previous tenure at Interior under Trump, and As Deputy Secretary from 2020-2021, MacGregor oversaw policies that undermined environmental regulations, expanded drilling on public lands, and disrupted the government-to-government relationship with tribal nations.
That alone is grounds for declaring her nomination void.
MacGregor also championed the opening of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas development, threatening one of our nation's most pristine wilderness areas. MacGregor has also pushed through reforms weakening implementation of the National Environmental Policy Act, reducing environmental reviews for major federal projects.
Empowering someone like MacGregor with a leadership role at Interior would signal a troubling regression to the anti-conservation, pro-industry agenda that defined the previous administration's public lands policy.
Any future Interior Department must course correct toward balanced stewardship that protects our natural heritage for future generations while respecting the sovereignty of Native American communities.
MacGregor's hardline industry loyalties make her unfit to serve in this capacity. Reject her nomination, question her closely and expose her damaging environmental record, and Vote NO. Thank you.
