I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the implementation of the Laken Riley Act and to urge you to support efforts to repeal this legislation. I understand that you voted in support, but understandably couldn’t have predicted the abuses. While the act was introduced with the intention of enhancing public safety, its enforcement has led to significant abuses, including racial profiling, indefinite detention, and denial of bond—practices that undermine justice and due process.
Immigrant communities have been disproportionately targeted under this act. Instances of racial profiling have been documented, with law enforcement detaining individuals solely based on suspicion of their immigration status. In some cases, immigrants have faced indefinite detention without sufficient evidence, even when they were accused of minor offenses or wrongfully detained. Survivors of domestic violence and other crimes have avoided seeking assistance out of fear of detention and deportation. These abuses highlight the harmful consequences of this legislation and its failure to uphold constitutional rights.
History has shown us that laws with significant unintended consequences can and should be repealed. For example, Arizona's SB 1070, known as the "Show Me Your Papers" law, faced similar criticisms for enabling racial profiling and was ultimately struck down in part by the Supreme Court. Additionally, aspects of the 1994 Crime Bill were repealed or reformed due to public outcry and evidence of its role in exacerbating systemic inequities.
Repealing the Laken Riley Act would address these abuses and reaffirm our commitment to justice, equality, and the protection of civil liberties. I urge you to take a stand against this legislation and work towards its repeal.
Thank you for your attention to this critical issue. I look forward to your response and hope to see meaningful action taken to protect the rights and dignity of all individuals in our community.
