Stop Trump’s Dangerous Obsession With Territorial Expansion—Act Now

I am begging you, as your constituent and fellow American, to act before this becomes a crisis we can no longer contain. Donald Trump’s increasingly expansive vision of American territorial control cannot be dismissed as another provocative statement or social-media stunt. His repeated demands regarding Greenland—and now imagery depicting virtually the entire North American region, Greenland, Iceland, Central America, and the Caribbean as part of the United States—should alarm every member of Congress who takes our Constitution, our alliances, and international law seriously. History has shown us the danger of treating territorial expansionism as harmless rhetoric. In the 1930s, Nazi Germany pursued an aggressive campaign of territorial expansion. The 1938 annexation of Austria, followed by further demands and expansion, demonstrated the devastating consequences of allowing increasingly aggressive territorial ambitions to proceed without meaningful resistance. We have learned enough from history to know that democratic institutions must respond when a leader embraces increasingly expansive visions of national power and territorial control. Congress cannot simply watch and wait. I am pleading with you: use every constitutional authority available to you to stop this dangerous course. Hold immediate hearings. Demand answers. Use congressional oversight and legislation to establish clear limits on any attempt to acquire foreign territory without lawful consent. And if the President is unable or unwilling to faithfully discharge the duties of his office, Congress and the appropriate constitutional actors must seriously consider the lawful mechanisms available—including impeachment or, where its constitutional requirements are met, the Twenty-Fifth Amendment. This is bigger than one president. It is about whether the United States remains a constitutional republic governed by laws, treaties, democratic institutions, and respect for the sovereignty of other nations—or becomes a country where one president’s territorial ambitions dictate our foreign policy. Please, do not wait for the next escalation. Do not wait until the unthinkable becomes irreversible. Stop this insanity now. Defend the Constitution. Defend our alliances. Defend the sovereignty of our neighbors. Defend American democracy before it is too late.
