The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a federal law that guarantees a free and appropriate public education for all students with disabilities. This civil rights law must be upheld to protect the educational rights of millions of students across the country. Any efforts to weaken or dismantle the U.S. Department of Education could jeopardize this vital legislation and the civil rights enforcement responsibilities of the agency. Education is a fundamental right, and we cannot allow unqualified individuals without experience in education policy to undermine laws that safeguard equal access to quality education for all students, including those with disabilities. We need responsible, qualified leadership at the Department of Education committed to upholding laws like IDEA that are critical for ensuring equitable educational opportunities. Dismantling the Department of Education or appointing unqualified personnel would be a disservice to students and a violation of their civil rights.
