The bi-partisan bill H.R.4756- Community News and Small Business Support Act was introduced in Congress in July of this year. This bill would provide tax incentives that support local media. This bill is designed to help local journalism thrive and flourish. Local journalism is crucial as it provides communities with an awareness of local government and environmental topics that directly affect our everyday lives, promotes identity, provides crucial local election data, and encourages civic engagement. This bill would help support local journalism by local reporters [who have a vested interest in their community] and encourage the best possible coverage. A tax credit for 'household news subscriptions' is not included at this time. I would think that a ‘household tax credit’ could be implemented much like the educator expense tax deduction (an "above-the-line" deduction that's applied before you decide whether to take the standard or itemized deduction). I would be eager to utilize such an incentive; subscribing to a greater variety of local journalism outlets knowing that I could look forward to a tax credit upon filing.
I think HR4756 is a great step in the right direction to preserve and promote local news. Text is now available to learn more about this compelling bill at Congress (dot) gov. I urge you to support and co-sponsor this bill. Join the over twenty co-sponsors already in support of this bill.
