Urge Passage of Constitutional Amendment to Protect Marriage Equality

I am writing to express my deep concern about the long-term security of marriage equality in our nation. While some argue that fears about the Supreme Court overturning marriage equality are unfounded, I believe we cannot afford to be complacent on this critical issue of civil rights.
It's true that public support for same-sex marriage is at an all-time high, with 72% of Americans believing same-sex couples should have the right to marry. The passage of the Respect for Marriage Act with bipartisan support was certainly a positive step. However, I firmly believe that the fundamental right to marry should not be subject to the changing composition of the Supreme Court or shifting political winds.
The Obergefell v. Hodges decision in 2015 was a landmark ruling, but as we've seen with other precedents, Supreme Court decisions can be overturned. While experts may currently consider it unlikely for the Court to take up a case challenging Obergefell, we must think long-term about protecting this essential right.
I urge you to support and actively work towards passing a constitutional amendment that would enshrine marriage equality as a fundamental right for all Americans. This would provide the strongest possible protection for same-sex couples and their families, ensuring that their marriages are recognized and respected across all states, regardless of future court decisions or legislative changes.
Taking this step would not only secure the rights of millions of Americans but also demonstrate our nation's commitment to equality and justice. It would put to rest any lingering uncertainty and prevent this issue from being used as a political tool to divide us.
The broad public support for marriage equality, including 56% of Republicans, suggests that such an amendment could garner the necessary bipartisan backing. I ask that you champion this cause, reach across the aisle, and work to build the coalition needed to make this constitutional protection a reality.
The time to act is now, while we have momentum and broad public support. Please don't let this opportunity pass. Our fellow citizens deserve the peace of mind that comes with knowing their marriages and families are protected by the highest law of the land.
