An open letter to State Governors & Legislatures

Reject Federal Demands for State Voter Roll Data

30 so far! Help us get to 50 signers!

I am writing to urge you to reject Attorney General Pam Bondi's demand for complete, unredacted voter rolls, including Social Security numbers, drivers license data, and party affiliations. This request represents an unacceptable federal overreach that threatens voter privacy and election integrity across the country. The DOJ has requested complete voter rolls from 44 states and Washington, DC, according to the Brennan Center for Justice. Only 11 red states have complied, with most others citing federal and state privacy laws protecting this sensitive data. The administration has sued 24 states that have refused to surrender this confidential information. Three federal courts have already ruled against similar DOJ demands. US District Judge David O. Carter in California warned that "The centralization of this information by the federal government would have a chilling effect on voter registration which would inevitably lead to decreasing voter turnout." Judges in Oregon and Georgia issued similar rulings, establishing clear legal precedent against these requests. Election security experts warn this data could be weaponized to amplify false claims of voter fraud, wrongly remove eligible voters, and challenge election outcomes. A centralized national database would be vulnerable to hackers and could be shared with the Department of Homeland Security to advance unproven narratives of noncitizen voting. State voter privacy laws exist to protect citizens. Complying with this demand would betray that trust and set a dangerous precedent that undermines the federalist principles our democracy depends on. States have the constitutional authority to administer their own elections and protect their voters' sensitive personal information. I urge you to stand firm in refusing this unlawful request and to publicly oppose any federal attempts to use litigation, intimidation, or coercion to extract voter data from states. Our democracy depends on protecting voter privacy and maintaining state sovereignty over election administration.
