Guard Virginians’ Right to Free and Fair Elections

I’m writing as both a constituent and an active participant in our community’s mutual aid and civic life. Like many Virginians, I’m proud of how our state has consistently defended democratic norms. But recent national developments, from presidential immunity expansions (Trump v. United States, 2024) to renewed pushes for mass civil-service purges (“Schedule F”), make me worry about how vulnerable everyday governance could become.
Here’s what I’m asking you to champion in Virginia right now:
1 Election worker safety & integrity
◦ Fund legal defense and security support for election officials at the county and city level. Threats against judges and prosecutors are rising nationwide, and election staff are natural next targets.
◦ Require localities to publish clear certification timelines aligned with the Electoral Count Reform Act, so no one can stall or sabotage Virginia’s results.
2 Civil-service protections
◦ Pre-empt any federal attempt to reclassify Virginia’s career staff under “Schedule F”–style purges. Our state employees deliver healthcare, education, and safety-net programs; they must be shielded from political retaliation.
3 Affirm local independence
◦ Support city/county resolutions affirming non-cooperation with unconstitutional federal overreach, especially around election certification or politicized removals of staff. Symbolic statements can give cover to other leaders who want to stand firm.
I believe this moment calls for courage. Virginians aren’t asking for partisanship; we’re asking for guardianship. History shows that democracy survives when leaders at every level choose to be heroes in defense of fair elections and professional governance.
Thank you for your leadership. Please let me know how I can support your efforts, whether through testimony, community organizing, or public education.
