Transgender people, and in particular transgender kids are under coordinated attack across the country. Over 280 bills designed to attack and further marginalize trans people are pending in States across the Nation. Far too many States are moving these bills toward their Governor's desks. To say that trans people will be killed by these bills is not hyperbole. And the people who are pushing this hateful and ignorant legislation know this. These bills are criminalizing access to life-saving gender affirming care that has been proven and endorsed by medical science. These bills are banning trans people from competing in sports - a fairness issue that, when it comes to high stakes competitions - the governing bodies of the specific sport and medical professionals have developed appropriate standards to ensure fair play. These actions erase LGBTQ people from public life by barring any ability to discuss the fact that not all people are cisgender or heterosexual in schools. And perhaps worst of all, Governor Abbott’s transgender kid and family witch hunt. This act specifically smacks of Nazi-tactics. The totality of these actions are clear - LGBTQ people are not worthy of basic human rights. They do not deserve the same human rights guaranteed to other citizens. Additionally, and most pernicious, is the impact this coordinated attack will have on the trans community. The transgender community already suffers from high levels of depression, anxiety, and suicide because of rampant transphobia. These bills are transphobia weaponized to be equivalent to a nuclear strike. The trans community has already begun to lose beautiful, valid people to the current onslaught. This attack must be stopped immediately. I am pleading with you to request President Biden direct the DOJ to investigate these bills popping up in State legislatures (and any executive actions by Governors) and immediately file emergency injunctions to invalidate the blatant animus and discrimination toward trans people and the broader LGBTQ community.
