An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Investigate Abuse in positions of power, not books for kids

Investigate Abuse in Positions of Power, Not Books I need you to prioritize investigating credible allegations of child abuse and sexual assault against those in positions of power rather than supporting book bans in schools and libraries. When individuals with significant political influence or wealth face serious accusations, those cases deserve thorough investigation and prosecution. The resources currently being directed toward removing books from library shelves would be far better spent on law enforcement efforts targeting actual predators, regardless of their party affiliation, celebrity status, or corporate position. Book bans don't protect children. They restrict access to information and literature that helps young people understand the world, including books that teach them about consent, bodily autonomy, and how to recognize abuse. Meanwhile, powerful people who pose real threats often face minimal scrutiny or consequences. I want to see you actively support funding for investigations into abuse allegations against public officials and high-profile figures, and oppose any legislation that restricts access to books. Protecting children means holding abusers accountable, not censoring libraries.
