Greenland Is Not for Sale and Neither Is Our Alliance

I demand you to reject any suggestion that the United States should threaten or use force against Denmark over Greenland. A bipartisan group of fifteen former senior United States officials, including four former ambassadors to NATO and multiple former assistant secretaries of state for Europe, issued a formal warning that talk of “taking” Greenland is reckless and dangerous. These leaders served across Democratic and Republican administrations. Their message is direct. Threatening an ally over territory would fracture NATO, weaken American credibility, and hand strategic victories to Russia and China. Denmark has been one of the United States’ most reliable allies for decades. Danish forces have stood with us in Korea, Afghanistan, and in ongoing efforts to counter Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic. Undermining that partnership would damage our national security far more than it could ever help it. There are legitimate ways to protect United States interests in the Arctic and in Greenland through diplomacy, cooperation, and alliance-based security. Military threats against an ally are not among them. Greenland is not a real estate listing. It is part of a sovereign partner within one of the most important military and diplomatic alliances the world has ever known. I urge you to speak publicly and clearly against any rhetoric or policy that treats allies as targets. Please use your position to defend NATO, protect our alliances, and prevent reckless actions that could destabilize Europe and empower authoritarian rivals.
