An open letter to the President & U.S. Congress

Teach the truth

13 so far! Help us get to 25 signers!

I am writing to urge you to support policies that ensure students across our nation are taught an honest, comprehensive, and fact-based American history. The strength of our democracy depends on citizens who understand where we have come from—our triumphs, our failures, and the lessons that can guide us toward a better future. We cannot build a stronger America by distorting or erasing the past. Students deserve to know why slavery was a moral and human tragedy that shaped our nation’s foundations. They deserve the full truth about the American Revolution—not just its ideals, but also the contradictions of liberty proclaimed while millions remained enslaved. They must learn about the Civil Rights Movement as a courageous struggle against injustice that transformed our society, and about the New Deal as a powerful example of government action that helped lift the country out of the Great Depression and reshape our economy. Teaching history honestly means confronting the good, the bad, and the ugly. It means recognizing the people and movements who expanded freedom and justice, while also acknowledging the systems and policies that denied those very values to many. This is not about assigning shame or blame—it is about preparing informed citizens who can recognize patterns, avoid past mistakes, and carry forward our nation’s progress. Selective or sanitized history robs future generations of the ability to fully understand America. Only by learning our full story can students appreciate how far we’ve come, and how much work remains to secure liberty and justice for all. I urge you to oppose any efforts to whitewash or censor history education, and instead to support initiatives that give teachers the freedom and resources to teach our nation’s story truthfully. Our democracy, our unity, and our future depend on it.
