An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Don’t let President Trump make us vulnerable to cyber attacks!

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding recent actions by the Trump administration that significantly undermine our nation’s cybersecurity defenses. The dismantling of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the suspension of its election security operations pose a grave threat to our national security. Reports indicate that CISA has been forced to halt all election security work and is conducting a comprehensive review of its activities over the past eight years. This suspension, prompted by unfounded claims of election fraud and accusations of online censorship, has led to the cessation of critical operations, including funding cuts to the Elections Infrastructure Information Sharing & Analysis Center. Such actions severely compromise the integrity of our electoral systems and leave them vulnerable to foreign interference. Furthermore, the administration has disbanded an FBI task force focused on investigating foreign influence operations and has implemented sweeping staffing cuts at CISA, including the dismissal of over 130 employees. These measures effectively dismantle federal efforts designed to protect our elections from adversaries such as Russia, China, and Iran. The absence of these critical defenses creates a perilous gap, inviting malign foreign activities that could destabilize our democratic processes. The decision to place key CISA employees on administrative leave, particularly those involved in combating election disinformation, further exacerbates the risk to our national security. This action not only undermines the agency’s mission but also sends a troubling message to our adversaries about the erosion of our cyber defenses. In light of these alarming developments, I urge you to take immediate action to: 1. Investigate the recent dismantling of CISA and the suspension of its election security operations to understand the rationale and implications of these decisions. 2. Restore funding and support for federal agencies tasked with safeguarding our electoral infrastructure and countering foreign interference. 3. Ensure that experienced cybersecurity professionals are reinstated to continue their vital work in protecting our nation’s critical infrastructure. Our national security and the integrity of our democratic institutions depend on robust and unwavering cybersecurity defenses. The recent actions to dismantle these protections are not only short-sighted but also perilously expose us to adversarial threats. I implore you to use your authority to reverse these decisions and reinforce our commitment to safeguarding the nation against cyber attacks.
