I am writing to urge you to oppose Kansas Senate Bill 254.
We saw a version of SB 254 last year, and it was deeply troubling then as it is now. This bill is a xenophobic attempt to surveil immigrant communities and strip access to critical benefits such as in-state tuition and SNAP assistance—benefits that some Kansas residents are legally eligible for regardless of U.S. citizenship status.
Policies like SB 254 do not make our communities safer or stronger. Instead, they sow fear, discourage families from seeking education and basic necessities, and punish people who are already contributing to our state through their labor, taxes, and community involvement. Targeting immigrant families through surveillance and benefit restrictions only deepens inequality and hardship, particularly for children.
As a person of faith, I am especially compelled to speak out. I believe that God’s love and human dignity are not limited by borders, paperwork, or documentation. Our faith traditions consistently call us to welcome the stranger, care for the poor, and protect the vulnerable—not to single them out for punishment or exclusion.
Kansas should be focused on policies that uplift families, expand access to education, and ensure that everyone can meet their basic needs. SB 254 moves us in the opposite direction.
I respectfully ask you to reject SB 254 and instead support legislation that reflects compassion, justice, and the shared humanity of all who call Kansas home.
