Demand Accountability for Inflammatory Political Rhetoric

I am writing to demand immediate action regarding the dangerous escalation of political rhetoric that is directly contributing to violence against elected officials and citizens. President Trump’s repeated use of dehumanizing language—calling Democrats “radical left lunatics,” “the enemy from within,” and claiming they are “more dangerous than China and Russia”—must be condemned by our elected leaders. This rhetoric has real consequences. In June 2025, Vance Boelter shot and killed Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, and wounded State Senator John Hoffman and his wife. Federal prosecutors found Boelter had a hit list of 45 Democratic officials and was motivated by political hatred. Yesterday, conservative activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated at a Utah university event, adding to a documented spike in political violence affecting officials across party lines. Research consistently shows inflammatory political rhetoric increases violence risk. The Capitol Police recorded 14,000 threatening incidents against members of Congress in 2025 alone—up from 9,000 in all of 2024. When the President of the United States labels political opponents as “enemies” and suggests military deployment against “radical left lunatics,” it legitimizes violence in the minds of unstable individuals. I demand you publicly condemn President Trump’s dangerous rhetoric and call on him to stop using dehumanizing language about fellow Americans. If he refuses, I expect you to introduce censure resolutions and use every legislative tool available to hold him accountable. Our democracy cannot survive when elected officials fuel the very violence that threatens our institutions. The time for polite disagreement has passed. I need to know where you stand on protecting the safety of elected officials and preserving civil discourse in our democracy.
