Support SB42 - Allow Californians to Weigh In on Public Financing for Elections

Today I take pen in hand to write and urge your support for SB42 the California Fair Elections Act. The time has come to give Californians a voice on the issue of public financing of elections. SB 42 takes an important step by placing a measure on the November 2026 ballot to remove the current ban, empowering local governments and the state to explore public financing options. This would help address the escalating influence of money in politics and open up the electoral process to a more diverse range of candidates without being beholden to wealthy donors or special interests. In a 2024 poll, 81% of likely California voters expressed concern that big money campaign contributors have too much influence over elected officials, while 63% felt ordinary voters have too little influence. When given the opportunity, voters in Los Angeles, Berkeley, and Oakland have overwhelmingly supported public financing measures by large majorities. Clearly, there is a strong desire among Californians to reduce the corrosive effects of money in politics and ensure our elected representatives truly reflect the will of the people, not just the wealthy few. Public financing has proven effective in empowering grassroots candidates, leveling the playing field, and restoring public trust in the integrity of our elections. It is a crucial step towards a more equitable and representative democracy. By passing SB 42, we can finally give Californians the chance to decide this issue directly and potentially pave the way for much needed reform. The time to act is now.
