An open letter to the President & U.S. Congress; State Governors & Legislatures

Preserve the role of an unbiased, transparent National Archivist

99 so far! Help us get to 100 signers!

The National Archives plays a vital role in safeguarding the integrity of our democratic processes and government accountability. It is imperative that the Archivist of the United States remains an apolitical position, selected solely on professional qualifications to uphold the important duties of the office without partisan influence. Reinstating the previous Archivist or ensuring a new appointee meets the highest standards of objectivity, transparency and commitment to factual reporting is crucial for preserving public trust and the proper functioning of key constitutional mechanisms like the Electoral College, constitutional amendment process, and records management across federal agencies. Maintaining an independent National Archives, free from political interference, is essential to protect our democratic principles and the American people's right to access accurate information about their government's actions.
