An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Stop Trump's Indiscrimate Firings

1 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

The Trump administration's attempt to remove the head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency without cause represents an alarming overreach of executive power that threatens the independence of federal agencies. This unilateral firing disregards the intent of Congress when structuring these agencies to insulate them from political pressure and whims. Allowing the president to summarily dismiss agency leaders risks transforming them into partisan extensions of the White House rather than impartial public servants. This abuse of authority undermines institutional checks and balances vital to our democratic system of government. Strong and independent federal agencies are essential to properly regulate industries, protect consumers, and uphold the rule of law. I urge you to oppose this dangerous precedent that could enable future presidents to similarly purge agency leaders who uphold their statutory duties over the chief executive's policy preferences. Safeguarding the integral role of these agencies is crucial to preserving accountability and serving the national interest.
