Fully fund Fair Housing Initiatives Program to combat discrimination

Congress must preserve full funding for the Department of Housing and Urban Development's Fair Housing Initiatives Program (FHIP). FHIP provides vital resources to local nonprofit  advocacy organizations on the frontlines of advancing fair housing and combating discriminatory practices that deprive families of equal access to housing opportunities.   FHIP enables these groups to process 75% of fair housing complaints annually and educates the public on fair housing laws. Fair housing is a cornerstone of civil rights, ensuring equal access to safe, affordable homes regardless of race, ethnicity, disability status, or other protected characteristics. Without FHIP funding, vulnerable communities will face increased barriers to securing housing, further entrenching systemic inequities.   The proposed elimination of this program in the FY26 budget, coupled with the Trump regime's recent termination of 78 FHIP grants, represents an unconscionable attack on fair housing rights. Congress has a moral and legal obligation to robustly fund FHIP and uphold the principles of equal opportunity and justice for all.
