Feeding Families Is Not Fraud: Reject Cuts to SNAP

I am writing in response to recent efforts and statements by lawmakers proposing cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) on the grounds of reducing fraud and abuse. I reject this framing and challenge you to examine the actual facts before supporting such harmful policies.
According to the USDA, the fraud rate in SNAP is approximately 1%. That means 99% of benefits are used correctly by eligible individuals and families. Additionally, SNAP is administratively efficient, with overhead costs averaging only 6%, ensuring that the vast majority of funds go directly to feeding people in need.
Contrary to popular myths, undocumented immigrants are ineligible for SNAP. Claims that the program discourages work are also misleading—most adult recipients who are able to work already do, and strict work requirements are in place for those without dependents.
Cutting SNAP doesn’t save money—it shifts costs. Food insecurity leads to increased healthcare expenses, poor educational outcomes, and long-term economic hardship. It is a short-sighted and morally questionable decision to take food from children and struggling families in the name of deficit reduction.
I urge you to take a clear stand: feeding children is more important than enriching billionaires with tax breaks and loopholes. This is a test of values. Choose to invest in people, in dignity, and in the basic human right to food.
