Urge Federal Action to Prevent Voter Suppression Before Midterm Elections

I am writing to urge immediate federal action to address voter suppression tactics that are undermining democratic participation ahead of the midterm elections. The recent Texas primary election demonstrated how state-level election law changes can systematically deny citizens their right to vote, and Congress must act now to prevent similar scenarios from unfolding nationwide.
The Texas primary was the first conducted under new state election laws that changed designated polling places for many voters. In Dallas and Williamson Counties, Democratic voters faced severe confusion because local Republican parties abandoned the longstanding tradition of holding joint primaries, and this critical information was not adequately communicated. Joyce Vance, a law professor at the University of Alabama, documented cases where voters were sent between polling locations, with one voter being directed to a location 15 minutes away only to be told to return to their original site. She characterized this as flat-out voter suppression designed to deny people their right to vote.
When a lower court ordered polling places to remain open an additional two hours due to the confusion, the Texas Supreme Court overruled this decision and mandated that ballots submitted after the original deadline be separated. This judicial intervention compounded the suppression by refusing to remedy the chaos created by inadequate voter communication.
With midterm elections approaching in all states, Congress has a narrow window to establish federal protections that prevent similar tactics. I urge you to support legislation that requires states to provide clear, timely notification of polling place changes, establishes minimum standards for voter communication, and creates federal oversight mechanisms to address systematic barriers to voting access.
The right to vote is fundamental to our democracy. Federal action is necessary to ensure that no American faces the obstacles Texas voters encountered. What specific steps will you take before the midterms to protect voting rights nationwide?
