Clearing 420 acres of pristine state forest near Gaylord for a solar farm is counterproductive to Michigan's environmental goals. While renewable energy is crucial for combating climate change, deforestation can increase greenhouse gas emissions and undermine public support for solar projects. The Michigan Healthy Climate Plan specifically advises against land-use conversions that lead to a net rise in emissions, prioritizing land uses that reduce emissions instead. Installing solar arrays over existing parking lots would be a better alternative, utilizing space that is already developed while providing shade for vehicles. Repurposing degraded or previously cleared sites near existing transmission lines would also align better with the state's climate objectives. Utilizing a portion of solar leasing revenues to acquire replacement forestland for carbon sequestration and habitat connectivity could help mitigate some impacts, but ultimately fails to justify the initial loss of an intact forest ecosystem. Michigan should explore alternative locations like parking lots that avoid deforestation to truly uphold its commitment to environmental protection while advancing clean energy development.
