As your constituent, I’m writing to urge you to oppose the recently passed House budget reconciliation bill as it moves to the Senate.
This bill contains provisions that go far beyond standard fiscal policy. It includes language that would effectively block U.S. courts from enforcing certain injunctions and temporary restraining orders:
“No court of the United States may use appropriated funds to enforce a contempt citation for failure to comply with an injunction or temporary restraining order…”
This would allow any administration to openly defy judicial rulings without consequence. That’s not a partisan issue – that’s a serious threat to the foundational principle of checks and balances, and a violation of the norms that have helped our democracy function for nearly 250 years.
I’m also deeply concerned that this legislation makes sweeping cuts to programs like Medicaid and food assistance while delivering trillions in permanent tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans and large corporations. These programs are vital lifelines for millions of families, especially as the cost of living continues to rise. I believe we can find a more balanced and responsible approach to the federal budget that doesn’t come at the expense of working families or democratic accountability.
This country was built on shared values: equal justice under law, responsible governance, and the idea that no one is above the law.
I respectfully urge you to reject this legislation in its current form. Please work toward a bipartisan budget that protects our most vulnerable citizens and preserves the integrity of our democratic institutions.
Thank you.
