As your constituent, I urge you to support the Paycheck Fairness Act of 2021 (S. 205/H.R 7). Today, women earn just an average of 82 cents for every dollar white men earn. This pay gap is even wider for Black, Hispanic, and Indigenous women, and exists across all occupations—including those that are dominated by women and vital to our nation, such as education and nursing.
Working women are crucial providers for their families, but they cannot fulfill their responsibilities when their pay is not what it should be. This is not only unfair to the women themselves, but to the loved ones depending on them.
The Paycheck Fairness Act will require employers to demonstrate that gender is not the reason they pay employees different wages for the same jobs. It will also prohibit employers from asking job candidates about their salary histories, and protect employees from facing retaliation if they discuss their pay with colleagues.
Furthermore, it will strengthen enforcement of equal pay laws and put in place robust remedies for discrimination.
I ask you to support the Paycheck Fairness Act of 2021.
