Jim O’Neill is not a doctor, not a scientist, not a public health expert. He is a hedge fund manager tied to Peter Thiel, infamous for advocating that the FDA approve drugs without proving they work. His own words: “Let people start using them at their own risk.” That is not reform. It is reckless profiteering that would put snake oil on pharmacy shelves and leave cancer patients, children, and families vulnerable to false hope and financial ruin.
The CDC must remain a shield for science, not a weapon for politics and greed. O’Neill’s appointment comes after Susan Monarez, a qualified scientist, was ousted simply for refusing to fire career experts and rubber-stamp dangerous directives.
