An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Oppose Glyphosate Deregulation and Liability Immunity for Manufacturers

I am writing to urge you to oppose the recent executive order prioritizing glyphosate production and granting its manufacturer immunity from liability. This policy puts corporate profits ahead of public health and removes critical legal protections for Americans harmed by this chemical. The World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer classified glyphosate as a "probable carcinogen" in 2015, with specific links to lymphoma. Research has also connected glyphosate exposure to lung and kidney disease, gut disease, hormonal disruption, and cancer. Despite these documented health risks, the Trump administration has declared glyphosate essential to national security and is shielding Bayer from lawsuits. The administration even filed a brief on behalf of Bayer in a liability case scheduled for Supreme Court argument in April 2025. This policy will hit rural agricultural communities the hardest. According to a 2022 NBC News study, the counties with the highest glyphosate usage rates include Nueces County, San Patricio County, and Lynn County in Texas, as well as Mississippi County in Arkansas. Families in these areas face the greatest exposure risk, yet they are being stripped of their right to seek compensation when this chemical causes harm. Granting liability immunity to chemical manufacturers sets a dangerous precedent. It removes the financial incentive for companies to ensure their products are safe and eliminates accountability when people are injured. Even Bayer warned it would stop U.S. production unless the government shielded it from lawsuits, acknowledging the serious liability concerns surrounding this product. I ask you to publicly oppose this executive order and support legislation that would restore liability protections for pesticide-related harm. Americans deserve the right to hold corporations accountable when their products cause injury, and our agricultural communities should not be treated as sacrifice zones for corporate profit.
