I am writing to express my deep concern regarding President Trump’s recent rhetoric and actions toward Canada, which suggest a desire to annex our closest ally and trading partner. This is an unprecedented and alarming violation of international law and threatens the diplomatic, economic, and security relationships that have defined U.S.-Canada relations for over a century.
Since November 2024, Trump has repeatedly implied that Canada should become part of the United States, using economic coercion, misinformation, and public threats. He has referred to Canada’s Prime Minister as “Governor Trudeau,” falsely claimed that a majority of Canadians support annexation, and stated his intention to dismantle existing treaties governing trade and border relations. On multiple occasions, he has suggested that economic warfare—such as the imposition of harsh tariffs on Canadian imports—could be used as leverage to force Canada into submission. Reports of increased surveillance flights over Canadian airspace and leaked annexation plans further raise the specter of a serious diplomatic crisis.
Canada is not just our neighbor—it is one of our strongest allies, bound to us by mutual defense agreements such as NATO and deeply integrated into our economy. Undermining Canada’s sovereignty damages America’s credibility on the world stage, disrupts vital trade flows, and alienates a key partner in maintaining North American security. Already, Canadians are responding with economic boycotts and travel cancellations, demonstrating the strain these reckless statements are placing on our relationship.
I urge you to take immediate action to reaffirm the United States’ commitment to Canada’s sovereignty. Congress must publicly denounce any attempt—political, economic, or otherwise—to pressure Canada into annexation. Furthermore, legislative measures should be introduced to ensure that no administration can unilaterally withdraw from treaties or impose extreme economic penalties on an ally for political gain.
The United States stands for democracy and self-determination. Canada has chosen its path as an independent nation, and we must respect that choice. I hope you will use your position to push back against these dangerous ideas and work to preserve the strong U.S.-Canada alliance that has served both nations so well.
