An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Reject cuts to Social Security based on unsubstantiated claims

70 so far! Help us get to 100 signers!

Musk's claim that there is $500-700 billion in waste and fraud in federal entitlement programs vastly exceeds estimates from independent watchdogs. This claim appears to be an attempt to justify draconian cuts to vital programs like Social Security that provide a financial lifeline for millions of retired and disabled Americans. His allegation that Democrats are paying undocumented immigrants through these programs to gain voters is an incendiary political attack not grounded in facts. While reforms may be needed to strengthen Social Security's long-term solvency, abruptly slashing benefits would violate promises made to those who paid into the system their entire working lives. Any changes should be made thoughtfully and without jeopardizing the financial security of vulnerable populations. Cuts based on unsubstantiated claims of widescale fraud are misguided. I urge you to reject proposals that would undermine Social Security and other essential federal programs. These systems have flaws that should be addressed, but indiscriminate cuts based on inflammatory rhetoric are not the solution. I ask that you prioritize facts over partisan allegations when considering reforms that could impact millions of Americans.
