Today I’m writing to urge you to oppose attempts by the US Army Corps of Engineers to effectively fast track work on the Enbridge Energy Project underwater pipeline, known as “Line 5”.
Over the protests of Indigenous Tribes, state and environmental review process, the US Army Corps of Engineers of Engineers has bypassed a full review of the Line 5 tunnel projects under the pretext of a made up “energy emergency” by this environmentally reckless Trump Administration.
As reported, timelines were moved, input has been sidetracked, and everything has been done to avoid meaningful review of this potentially hazardous project. The measures taken cut out Tribal Nations, the public, and state regulators from providing meaningful input, and they make the review wildly inconsistent with federal law.
This is unacceptable.
The Line 5 project is essentially a rebuild of an ancient pipeline moving oil and gas under the Great Lakes to Canada. Most of that oil and gas is going TO Canada, and not the reverse, which means it does nothing for supplying the US with any further energy reserves, but merely exists to enrich Enbridge - a Canadian Company — and its construction partners and fossil fuel companies with an interest in this pipeline.
It’s a terrible idea from the start, and threatens drinking water and safety as well as the sovereign rights of Native American tribes, to whom the threatened parts of the Great Lakes are sacred.
Once again, review and consideration of such a plans environmental impact is being ignored by the Army Corps by a fake energy emergency at the direction of an unhinged and chaotic administration.
In the end, why do we need this dinosaur of a pipeline when clean energy alternatives can be brought online faster, and cheaper than ever before?
I urge you to oppose this pipeline project, hold hearings, and demand
that USACE follow proper review of its potential hazards, which are many.
Thank you.
