An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Lawmakers must uphold dignity, not inflame tensions or mock victims

34 so far! Help us get to 50 signers!

Mike Lee's comments making light of the tragic murder were highly inappropriate and disrespectful to the victim's family and community. Lawmakers have a responsibility to uphold the dignity of their office and not inflame tensions or trivialize violence. Regardless of political affiliation, elected officials who spread misinformation and mock victims of crime should face formal censure. Such conduct undermines public trust and sows division when we need leaders committed to bringing people together and addressing real issues with empathy and wisdom. I urge you to take strong action to reprimand those responsible and reaffirm our shared values of decency and respect.
