As a resident of the state of Wisconsin, I urge you to support legislation in continuing to provide environmentally mindful death care options. Extensive research has found that current funeral industry practices are devastating to the state of our planet.
I believe Natural Organic Reduction should be available as an alternative option for families in our state. Washington, Oregon, and Colorado have already legalized NOR, and we hope for Wisconsin to be next on that list.
Here are a few statistics about why this is so important:
• Each cremation uses about 28 gallons of fuel and releases about 540 lbs. of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere
• Medium article exit poll 2016 stated that 79% of respondents were interested in green death care options
• Mercury Vapors are the #1 lethal toxin in crematory vapors.
Currently, no crematories have adequate filters for mercury or the many other heavy metals, plastics, and dioxins that are emitted in the vaporization of a body.
This is a sector of basic society that is rarely noticed but has affected almost every one of us. Simply put, funeral providers should be held accountable for considering the devastating impact their practices are having on our earth.
Thank you for considering that many of us want our last act on earth to be mindful, and that we want to leave a legacy of benefitting the planet, not further adding to its destruction.
