Palestinian activist and recent Columbia University graduate Mahmoud Khalil, a lawful permanent resident, was wrongfully arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers on Saturday. His detention represents a disturbing attack on free speech and a violation of immigration laws. As a leading organizer of pro-Palestinian protests on campus, Khalil has been targeted by the administration for his activism. However, he has not been charged with any crime. The revocation of Khalil's immigration status solely due to his peaceful advocacy against human rights abuses is a blatant infringement on the First Amendment. This unjustified arrest sets a dangerous precedent for criminalizing dissent and must be immediately rectified. I urge you to demand Khalil's unconditional release from DHS custody and a reversal of Columbia University's policy allowing ICE on campus without a warrant.
