Greetings. I am a voting constituent in rural west Texas.
Finally. At long last. A true, brave justification of why a stalwart of the GOP won’t be supporting the candidacy of DJT…
“Donald Trump is pursuing and articulating an agenda that is at odds with the conservative agenda that we governed on during our four years,” [Mike] Pence said, “and that is why I cannot in good conscience endorse Donald Trump in this campaign.”
Now, this should be all the weak-kneed and spineless amongst you need to come out with your own pious proclamations of ‘Gosh I’d like to support him but he’s just not conservative enough.’
LOL here. Once a politician, always a politician.
It’s not that Mr. Pence views Trump as dangerous to democracy, or that he’s upset over Trump’s attacking him for his refusal to try to overturn the 2020 election on Jan. 6. Or the whole tacit approval of “Hang Mike Pence,” or attacking his own V-P on Twitter even after being informed of the violence at the Capitol. Or any of the myriad of other ethical, legal, or even moral failings of the GOP candidate. All that stuff is fine.
No. It’s that he’s not being harsh enough on the issues of abortion, the national debt, China, and TikTok.
Unlike others who left the administration with eyes-wide-open and are now loudly sounding alarm bells (better late than never), this is just another example of a politician keeping an eye on future aspirations.
But it’s one that at least allows a facade of seeming adherence to the conservative code you’re always going on about.
Time will tell how many of you choose the off-ramp Mr. Pence just gave you.
