Today I take pen in hand to write in support of re-introducing the Protect America’s Children from Toxic Pesticides Act. This legislation introduced in the 118th Congress. The latest legislation was designed to close loopholes and strengthen laws against the use of a number of dangerous pesticides. These have been a constant source of concern and news stories, especially during this Administration.
The laws have a co-benefit in that it will help front line workers – mostly immigrants – that are routinely exposed to pesticides while at work in the fields. Studies have shown that paraquat, chlorpyrifos, and other neocotinoids pose a serious health risk to children and adults alike. This bill is common sense reform that will finally put the brakes on the sale and use of these substances.
The savings in health care alone could amount to tens of billions of dollars in care for those exposed. Furthermore, the European Union has already banned the use of many of these substances. It is obvious that the pesticide makers have long exploited our weaker laws for their profits.
With many health care programs at risk of being cut, and science under active attack, it’s not right to put profits ahead of people’s health. These bills are just legislation that will benefit many in our poorer communities.
I support this legislation as previously introduced in the 118th Congress. I hope we can count on your support and co-sponsorship this time as well.
