The Republican-led budget reconciliation proposal would force devastating cuts to Medicaid in order to fund more tax breaks for the wealthy. If passed, it will strip health care from millions of Americans — and those who vote for it should expect to be held accountable at the ballot box.
Medicaid currently provides life-saving health insurance to more than 72 million low-income and disabled Americans. Gutting this essential program to benefit the ultra-rich is morally indefensible and politically toxic.
Two options under consideration would cause irreparable harm:
1. Cutting federal funding for Medicaid expansion. This would make coverage unaffordable for states, particularly the 40 states and D.C. that expanded Medicaid under the ACA. In 12 states, federal cuts would automatically end expansion altogether.
2. Imposing work requirements. These red-tape-heavy policies are expensive, ineffective, and unnecessary. Over 92% of non-disabled adult Medicaid recipients already work or face major barriers to employment like caregiving, illness, or schooling.
These changes are not just cruel — they’re deadly. Independent estimates show that cutting federal Medicaid contributions would lead to over 34,000 additional deaths every year. Medicaid isn’t wasteful — it’s one of the most cost-effective, respected health programs in the country. It keeps families healthy, workers on the job, and communities strong.
You are being asked to vote on a budget that would:
• Slash health care for tens of millions
• Punish the working poor
• Prioritize the wealthiest Americans at the expense of the most vulnerable
We demand that you oppose any budget reconciliation bill that cuts Medicaid. A vote for this budget is a vote against your constituents — and we will remember it. Your seat is not guaranteed. If you support this attack on basic health care, do not expect re-election.
