Greetings. I am a voting constituent in rural west Texas.
We the people continue to try and understand how the GOP, party of thinking intellectuals, of patriotism, of morality, of doing the right thing, has sunk to such a historic low in just a few short years.
Daily shameful examples of the degradation keep piling up.
The RNC, doubling down on its support for Trump, has voted unanimously to censure the two Republican representatives on the January 6 committee: Liz Cheney (R-WY) and Adam Kinzinger (R-IL).
Ahead of the party vote, Cheney said: “Leaders of the Republican Party have made themselves willing hostages to a man who admits he tried to overturn a presidential election and suggests he would pardon Jan. 6 defendants…some of whom have been charged with seditious conspiracy. I’m a constitutional conservative and I do not recognize those in my party who have abandoned the Constitution to embrace Donald Trump. History will be their judge.”
History AND constituents will be their judge.
To think that upholding your convictions, showing allegiance to the country you took an oath to defend, doing the right thing regardless of politics, is now cause for public censure.
To disavow the lies that have upended the country is censured.
To call out your own party for siding with a danger to democracy and for keeping silent when the country needs them, needs their leadership, deserves condemnation.
Condemnation from a party that up until recently believed everything that Ms. Cheney believes. That would have supported efforts to find out what happened on January 6. And would be determined to make certain it can’t happen again.
And maybe behind closed doors, your side of the aisle is doing just that. But it would be nice to have the courage of your convictions in public as well.
At some point the individual players in all this will have lost their chance to save themselves from history’s verdict. Going along to get along is less than nothing.
Y’all can’t be happy with the state of things. Can you?
