Republicans in Congress have taken the extreme position that our economy and essential programs are worth destroying for petty political games. Kevin McCarthy is following the MAGA agenda set by members like Marjorie Taylor Greene and Matt Gaetz, and the rest of the caucus has been going along with it. Your constituents won’t stand for this. Elected officials - like you, I am sure - don’t want to be blamed for the impacts of a default or cuts to programs like Medicaid or K-12 Education. I want you to know that you will own the outcomes of default or these cruel cuts unless you support the clean bill. Why are the Republicans threatening our economy and security?
Republicans’ default bill hits working families the hardest. Slashing spending for critical programs has severe consequences. Republicans are jeopardizing the healthcare of 21 million people by cutting Medicaid, including seniors in nursing homes and children with disabilities. The GOP agenda would lead to 400,000 people who rely on food assistance programs going hungry. More than 32 million kids would have their learning disrupted by funding cuts to K-12 Education, and 108,000 teachers’ jobs would be eliminated. Seniors and families struggling to get by would be stuck paying 20% more for their heating bills next winter because Republicans want to end home heating programs for low-income households. Republicans must back off their plan to cause a default, or working families will pay the price.
