I’m writing today because I’m deeply concerned about the recent changes to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) that allow its special agents to carry firearms, make arrests, and execute search warrants.
This unprecedented move fundamentally alters the agency's mission and threatens America's longstanding identity as a welcoming nation of immigrants. This cannot be allowed.
As you know, USCIS was specifically created to handle immigration benefits, separate from enforcement agencies like ICE and CBP. This clear distinction has been crucial in encouraging immigrants to engage with the legal system without fear.
These new regulations — by Trump’s chief lackey Stephen Miller, blurs these lines, are likely deterring many from applying for legal status and potentially pushing them further into the shadows.
This weaponization of USCIS is part of a broader racist and biased agenda to restrict legal immigration and expand deportations. It's a dangerous shift that undermines our values and the positive contributions immigrants make to our society and economy.
In addition, it's just one piece of a larger effort to make citizenship harder to obtain, with recent policy changes that may significantly slow down naturalizations.
This is not the United States I grew up in, but some warped idea of a small cabal of demented people in charge of our government, and it’s doubtful that Trump even knows or cares what they do.
Instead of arming USCIS, we should be focusing on providing undocumented immigrants with a clear path to citizenship.
This approach would allow millions to fully participate in our society without living in constant fear of deportation. It would strengthen our communities, boost our economy, and uphold our tradition as a nation that welcomes those seeking a better life. We are a multiracial society whether these warped individuals around Trump, and Trump himself, like it or not.
I urge you to take immediate action to oppose these new USCIS regulations. Congress has the power to reverse this decision and ensure that USCIS returns to its original mission of facilitating legal immigration, not enforcement. I urge you to do so as soon as practicable.
Additionally, I ask that you support comprehensive immigration reform that provides a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. This isn’t just about immigration policy; it's about preserving the very essence of what it means to be American.
Thank you.
