An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Will You Step up?

3 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

I am deeply concerned about the security of our Social Security funds, the integrity of our personal data, and the fairness of recent budget proposals. First and foremost, Social Security is not an entitlement—it is our hard-earned money. For years, we have contributed to this fund, with our employers matching those contributions. When legislators refer to it as an "entitlement," it is both misleading and infuriating. Furthermore, Congress must pay back, with interest, what it has taken from the Social Security Trust Fund and used for general revenue. Additionally, I am alarmed by reports that the current budget resolution includes $4.5 trillion in tax cuts for the wealthiest 0.1%, with 88% of those cuts benefiting the ultra-rich. Billionaires like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos already pay little to no taxes, and this proposal would only widen the gap—robbing from the poor to give to the rich. Meanwhile, Medicaid cuts will hurt elderly nursing home residents, critically ill individuals, and low-income children. Reducing SNAP benefits will also have devastating effects on children and struggling families. Another urgent issue is data security. The so-called "DOGE boys" reportedly downloaded Treasury data, and while a judge ordered them to return it, who ensured it was truly deleted? We need someone of Chris Krebs' caliber—an expert with integrity—to conduct a thorough review of their servers and confirm that our private data is not still in their possession. Now, these same groups are targeting Social Security Administration (SSA) data, all while SSA staff cuts seem designed to weaken the agency, disrupt services, and pave the way for privatization. So I ask you: Who among our representatives will step up to protect Social Security? Who will ensure our personal data remains secure? Who will defend essential programs for the elderly, children, and those in need? We need real leadership now more than ever.
